This month at MonteCedro.

With its sunshine and warm evenings, August is an ideal month for events and activities. Join us in the coming weeks for a performance, a get-together or a presentation. Whether you are a film buff, music fan, bird watcher, or you simply love to meet people, there’s something for you to enjoy this month.

    Twelve Trees: The Deep Roots of our Future

    Using a dozen species from around the world, Dr. Dan Lewis from Huntington Gardens will discuss why we should care about trees. He’ll review why trees are important in the fight against climate change, how they continue to surprise us, and why they’re essential to our future.

    Extra Hour: Return to Healthy Habits

    Join us for another Extra Hour where we discuss practical ways to get back into a healthy routine after the summer months. We’ll outline simple strategies for rebuilding consistency with exercise, creating sustainable habits, and staying motivated without feeling overwhelmed. Whether you’re returning to fitness or looking for a fresh start, you’ll leave with a plan to help you get back on track.

    Autumn Song

    Renowned pianist, Dr. Kelly Anderson joins us this month to perform and discuss music inspired by fall. He will present works by composers such as Tchaikovsky, Lü, Duke and others. An instructor at Pasadena City College, Dr. Anderson records for various media including documentaries, and brings his storytelling to every performance.

    Strings & Slides

    Join Tom Hynes and Alex Iles for this unique concert featuring a trombone and guitar duo. Tom Hynes is a guitarist, composer, and Assistant Professor of Music at Azusa Pacific University. Alex Iles is a principal trombonist of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the LA Philharmonic, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. This performance is brought to you by our partnership with Melodia Mariposa.

    July Events

    It has been a Star Spangled month at MonteCedro, with so much to celebrate, experience, and enjoy. We had a Yankee Doodle Dandy style performance to celebrate America’s birthday, a Renovation Party for the Auditorium, multiple musical performances that wowed audiences, and outings that were both memorable and moving.

    Festivities on the Fourth

    The MC Theater Group presented their production “Independence!” to celebrate the 250th birthday of America. An appreciative audience packed the house and the performance earned thunderous applause. In the off Lake Bistro, we enjoyed an ice cream table filled with rum-infused berries that were set alight to capture the spirit of the day. It was a spectacular way to mark the Fourth of July celebrations!

    Renovation Party

    It was time to celebrate the end of an era. The MonteCedro auditorium is closing for renovations, so we sent it off in style! We began the night with wonderful music by Chloé Perrier Green, then were mystified by magic during dinner by Al Naz and ended the night dancing to the iconic tunes of Decades of Rock. Dinner was a spectacular menu of French cuisine that was served surrounded by whimsical “construction chic” decorations and costumes. The entire night was filled with joy as we celebrated all the memorable moments the Auditorium has provided over the years. P.S. We’re already planning the reopening party!

    Zoot Suit Not Required

    The wonderful Zoot Velasco visited MonteCedro to share his extraordinary life story. From infant to adult, his life has been filled with tragedies, triumphs, obstacles, and remarkable moments, including dance. After his talk, he demonstrated the robot, the moves that kicked off his career in the arts. We look forward to inviting Zoot back in the months ahead. Thank you to our partners at Altadena Heritage for planning this wonderful event for us.

    88 Keys of Inspiration

    Our concert piano was put to spectacular use by the hands of Dr. Vatché Mankerian of The Pasadena Conservatory. Playing a range of music from the great composers, he delighted the audience, amazing them with his incredible technique and talent. As the concert ended, calls of “Bravo” echoed throughout the auditorium. Brilliant.

    Memory Care Celebration

    The MonteCedro memory care neighborhood, “The Courtyards”, celebrated the opening of its redesigned garden and patio. With vases of flowers lovingly arranged by residents, colorful cookies and beautiful harp music, it was the perfect afternoon. Team members and independent living residents visited and enjoyed the festive atmosphere and warmth of The Courtyards community.

    We had the opportunity to visit the Hall of Crucifixion–Resurrection at Forest Lawn, home to two remarkable panoramic paintings by renowned artists. The Crucifixion, painted by acclaimed Polish artist Jan Styka, and The Resurrection, painted by American artist Robert Clark, left everyone in awe. Their extraordinary artistry, scale, and historical significance made for a truly memorable and inspiring experience.

    Let Freedom Fly

    A group of MonteCedro veterans made an extra-special trip to The Huntington, to donate a new flag. They were greeted with smiles and a meaningful gathering commenced. Introductions and military service were shared, then it was time for the lowering of the old flag and raising of the new. The veterans assisted with the folding of the old flag, paying respect to the true meaning of the Stars and Stripes. This flag presentation was an extra-special way to commemorate July 4th and the celebration of our country’s 250th Birthday.
