Why does some art draw you in? Every other month, the MonteCedro Art Committee offers an opportunity to explore our varied responses to the art in our collection. In May, we will look at pieces in the Art Collection that are mysterious. We will discuss why an artist might pick this subject or what made the artist depict this abstract. What do our own responses suggest as meanings? Come and join a lively conversation.

March is a month of transition in Southern California. The skies are blue (usually), the flowers are blooming, and there is a pep in the collective step of the community. As usual, there was plenty of energy and activity in and around MonteCedro as residents took advantage of every event. From musical concerts and artistic pursuits, outings and travel adventures, to making friends with new neighbors, March was filled with melody and memories.

At MonteCedro
Establishing connections before moving into a new community is a gift. Our most recent gathering for soon-to-be-residents of MonteCedro’s almost-completed villas was a delightful evening at The Athenaeum. Current and future residents were treated to an interactive cooking class with their talented Chef Octavio. He worked his culinary magic in a hearth oven, similar to the one coming to MonteCedro’s new restaurant Julia’s, which will be opening later this summer. The evening’s menu included flat breads, fresh fish, vegetables and California farm-to-table cuisine, giving a hint of the tastes to come in the new restaurant.
Guests enjoyed incredible food, lively conversation, and plenty of laughter while forming new friendships. The evening was a wonderful reminder of the vibrant community that is at the heart of MonteCedro.

A very special “Afterhours” musical event at MonteCedro featured the powerful yet sensitive voice of Matthew Hough. Accompanied by virtuoso Vijay Venkatesh on piano, the duo lit up the auditorium with a selection of popular opera standards. Bravo!

Outings
This month, residents enjoyed The Huntington Library Art Museum and Botanical Gardens. Memory care residents from The Courtyards community took a tram tour through the botanical gardens where the spectacular flora was in glorious spring bloom. Others enjoyed the visual arts exhibitions at the Huntington Art Gallery, followed by a delicious lunch. The blue skies and warm temperatures made for a perfect outing.
