Join Tom Hynes and Alex Iles for this unique concert featuring a trombone and guitar duo. Tom Hynes is a guitarist, composer, and Assistant Professor of Music at Azusa Pacific University. Alex Iles is a principal trombonist of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the LA Philharmonic, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. The arrival of fall brings a back-to-school energy at MonteCedro. We’re getting out and getting involved more than ever. From laugh-out-loud entertainment and healthy cooking classes, to birds of prey and books that travel, there was something for everyone last month at MonteCedro.
At MonteCedro
We enjoyed a fascinating outdoor presentation by Raptor Events. The stars of the show were two owls, a hawk, and a falcon. The wonderful handler talked about each bird as she walked around and let us get a close-up look. We were lucky enough to watch the hawk fly several times, lightly brushing its wings on our heads as it swooped over. It was a spectacular finale to our summer events program.

Media personality and 5-time Emmy Winner Fritz Coleman dropped by MonteCedro to share his wit and wisdom to packed house. His show, entitled Unassisted Living, is described as a “hysterical baby boomer support group”. It exceeded all expectations. Fritz’s keen observational humor and tell-it-like-it-is spirit had us howling with laughter.

We had our first visit of the season from Altadena Library’s mobile library. We browsed a large selection of books, ordered books for future visits, and some of us even applied for a library card. We are so happy to have monthly visits from the library and to be one of their community locations, bringing books to the residents of Altadena.

This month’s “Teaching Kitchen” focused on seafood and the benefits of the Mediterranean diet, of which seafood is a large part. Executive Chef Jared gave a cooking demonstration and talked about the superfoods that keep our brain and body healthy. We then enjoyed the results of his culinary talents, including fresh ceviche.

One of our recent Happy Hours was made even happier with the performance of the Chad Edwards Band. With a trombone, drums, bass and piano, the band delivered a great performance of jazz favorites.
Outings
Recently, we attended a spectacular performance of Water For Elephants at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. After losing what matters most, a young man jumps a moving train unsure of where the road will take him and finds a new home with the remarkable crew of a traveling circus. This musical, adapted from the book of the same name, debuted on Broadway in 2024, receiving seven Tony Award nominations. Variety called it “spellbinding entertainment” and we couldn’t agree more.

As Halloween approaches, perhaps it’s appropriate that we went to see Little Shop of Horrors put on by the Altadena Musical Theater. In the wake of the Eaton fire, the theater has had to relocate from the Charles Farnsworth Amphitheater to a temporary outdoor venue at Mountain View Mausoleum featuring custom-built staging and seating. Little Shop of Horrors is a darkly hilarious musical comedy that follows Seymour, a downtrodden and shy florist’s assistant whose life blossoms overnight, thanks to an otherworldly and hungry new plant named Audrey II. But there’s a catch. There’s always a catch! We laughed, we hummed along and had a delightful time.
