Calendar of events

  • October 15 11:00AM – 12:00PM Eaton Theater via Zoom

    Romeo and Juliet

Elizabeth Kaye, award-winning author, editor and dance historian joins us via Zoom to discuss ballet’s most romantic work, Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare’s immortal and haunting tale of the young, doomed lovers is danced with impassioned grace by the two dancers who formed what is known as the perfect partnership, Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn. The story is told in four exquisite pas de deux (a dance of two). These dances have a stunning, otherworldly beauty enhanced by the gorgeous music of Serge Prokofiev. If you love theater or dance, you will love this presentation.

    October 17 1:30PM – 3:30PM Eaton Theater

    Film Explorers: The Birds

Guest Guillaume Serina will introduce The Birds, the iconic film by Alfred Hitchcock, and lead a post-viewing discussion. The Birds, starring Tippi Hedren, follows a San Francisco socialite who visits a small coastal town where ordinary birds inexplicably begin aggressive and escalating attacks, disrupting daily life without explanation. This suspenseful thriller builds tension slowly, punctuated by visually striking set pieces and an eerie absence of a musical score. It’s notable for its groundbreaking special effects and enduring cultural impact.

    October 20 8:30AM – 9:30AM Off Lake Bistro

    Women’s Breakfast

The popular gathering of the ladies of MonteCedro is an ideal opportunity to get to know your future neighbors. Please RSVP early for this event as seating is limited.

    October 23 11:00AM – 12:00PM Station 8

    BOO!

Just in time for Halloween, renowned pianist, Dr. Kelly Anderson discusses and performs scary music by Orff, Dukas, Bach, and others. An instructor at Pasadena City College, Dr. Anderson records for various media including documentaries, and brings his storytelling to every performance.

    October 26 11:00AM – 12:00PM Eaton Theater

    The Giant Magellan Telescope

Dr. Rebecca Bernstein is the Chief Scientist for the Giant Magellan Telescope project, a next-generation ground-based optical-infrared observatory currently under construction in the Atacama Desert of Chile. The Giant Magellan Telescope is being designed and built to answer questions such as “how do black holes form?” and “is there life beyond our solar system?”, and to make discoveries we can’t yet imagine. In this talk, Dr. Bernstein will introduce us to the status of this remarkable new telescope.

    March Events

March is a month of transition in Southern California. The skies are blue (usually), the flowers are blooming, and there is a pep in the collective step of the community. As usual, there was plenty of energy and activity in and around MonteCedro as residents took advantage of every event. From musical concerts and artistic pursuits, outings and travel adventures, to making friends with new neighbors, March was filled with melody and memories.

    Future Residents and Ambassadors

Establishing connections before moving into a new community is a gift. Our most recent gathering for soon-to-be-residents of MonteCedro’s almost-completed villas was a delightful evening at The Athenaeum. Current and future residents were treated to an interactive cooking class with their talented Chef Octavio. He worked his culinary magic in a hearth oven, similar to the one coming to MonteCedro’s new restaurant Julia’s, which will be opening later this summer. The evening’s menu included flat breads, fresh fish, vegetables and California farm-to-table cuisine, giving a hint of the tastes to come in the new restaurant.

Guests enjoyed incredible food, lively conversation, and plenty of laughter while forming new friendships. The evening was a wonderful reminder of the vibrant community that is at the heart of MonteCedro.

    And The Band Played On

Music is an important part of an active (and interactive) lifestyle. MonteCerdo recently welcomed Camerata Pacifica. Drawing the finest chamber artists from around the world, Camerata Pacifica explores chamber music in live, dynamic performances. An oboe, flute, and piano trio brought their talent to MonteCedro for a spectacular morning performance. Lively, intriguing, and melodic, the talented musicians received roaring applause.

    Exotic Adventures

MonteCedro residents have lived incredible and interesting lives and hearing their stories about their adventures is captivating. Recently, one resident shared slides and stories from his travels to New Guinea. The packed auditorium was enthralled, whisked away on a fantastic, virtual adventure.

    Closer to the Heart

February was the month of hearts at MonteCedro’s memory care residents from The Courtyards community took With the red hearts of Valentine’s Day and painted hearts to celebrate the Olympics, there was never a shortage of love to share. Residents showed off their artistic talents, creating a blend of beautiful, heart-shaped odes to love, country, and team spirit.

    O Sole Mio

A very special “Afterhours” musical event at MonteCedro featured the powerful yet sensitive voice of Matthew Hough. Accompanied by virtuoso Vijay Venkatesh on piano, the duo lit up the auditorium with a selection of popular opera standards. Bravo!

    Outings

    In The Garden

This month, residents enjoyed The Huntington Library Art Museum and Botanical Gardens. Memory care residents from The Courtyards community took a tram tour through the botanical gardens where the spectacular flora was in glorious spring bloom. Others enjoyed the visual arts exhibitions at the Huntington Art Gallery, followed by a delicious lunch. The blue skies and warm temperatures made for a perfect outing.
