Join us for a screening of one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most shocking films of all time. The 1960 film Psycho redefined horror movies. The film score, written by Bernard Herrmann, was so iconic that Hitchcock said, “Thirty-three percent of the effect of Psycho was due to the music.” Marion Crane, played by Janet Leigh visits the Bates Motel and falls prey to one of cinema’s most notorious psychopaths Norman Bates, played by Anthony Perkins. A must-see for movie lovers. Theater snacks will be served.
A member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for 36 years, violinist Paul Stein has brought his musical experience into many educational and chamber music venues. Join us for this unforgettable performance!
It was a delightful start to fall at The Canterbury. We welcomed performers and explored some of the beauty of our surroundings. As the season progresses, even more events and activities are planned to take in the most of these beautiful, autumnal days.
At The Canterbury
Aloha from The Canterbury! Our annual Summer Luau event was a wonderful celebration this year. We donned our best Hawaiian shirts to embrace the mood. The weather was hot but we cooled off on the patio with mai tais and colorful leis. The highlight of the afternoon was an amazing performance by the Ku’uipo ‘O Hula Polynesian Dancers. Their joy and energy transported us in spirit to the Islands.

Recently, Willow House Mobile Boutique created a pop-up shop at The Canterbury. We were able to explore their range of beautiful items on display in the Valmonte Room. From clothing including handmade knitwear, to collectibles, jewelry and scarves, and even items for beloved pets, there was something for every taste. And we left feeling like we got a jump on our holiday shopping.

On a recent afternoon, Create with Susan brought her inspiration and we brought our enthusiasm as we learned how to make autumn grapevine wreaths. Weaving together the joy of creating by hand and the fun of spending time with friends, we left with new wreaths to display on our front doors.
Outings
We love to go on outings and our recent visit to Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden was a favorite. This 1.3 acre garden was built through the generosity of Mrs. Loraine Miller Collins in memory of her late husband, Earl Burns Miller. Loraine and Earl recognized the importance of travel, well-being, education and art as a means to self-development, which is reflected in this garden at California State University Long Beach. The Garden is a hybrid art form that combines typical elements of Japanese garden design within the context of its Southern California location. With so much to see, we went on a self- guided tour of this immaculate, serene garden and took lots of beautiful photos along the way.
Outings
Recently, residents of our sister community, The Covington joined us in Buena Park for lunch at the famous Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Restaurant. It’s a historic eatery located in Buena Park, right outside the Knott’s Berry Farm theme park gates. It opened in 1934 with Mrs. Knott and her children serving the first customers in their tea room and helped start the entire theme park itself. Given its name, it’s no surprise that it is renowned for its chicken. Everyone had a wonderful time sharing stories, experiences, and making new friends. The day was topped off with a bit of shopping at the nearby gift shops.
