    Song Book Series with Seth Becker

    The American Songbook is a monthly program specializing in the Golden Era of Stage and Screen. This month, we will be discussing the musical “Seesaw”. Please join us.

    Omnilore is a lifelong learning organization in the South Bay. Please join Leslie Criswell, a retired trial attorney and high school teacher, and 12-year Omnilore Member. Leslie will discuss Omnilore and answer any questions you might have.

    The Penny Royal Players and a Tribute to America

    The Penny Royal Players are a California-based community theater and philanthropic ensemble that blends storytelling, vocal performances, dance, and historical instruments to bring American history to life. Join us for a cocktail and appetizer as we listen to their patriotic sounds as they perform a “Tribute to America”.

    July 25 10:30AM – 11:30AM Art Studio

    Rubber Block Printmaking with Loren Kantor

    Learn to carve your own rubber blocks and make custom greeting cards. Participants use a tool to carve a soft rubber block. The carved block becomes a rubber stamp and is then used to make cards. The process is fun and easy.

    Enrichment Class: Photo & Video Management

    Anthony Brown, Tech Concierge from The Smarter Service will share tips for taking, sharing, organizing, and storing photos using tools such as Google Photos, iCloud and OneDrive.

    Last month was filled with events and outings at The Canterbury. Below are some of the activities that residents enjoyed.

    Lecture

    Duke Ellington

    The Omnilore Lecture on Duke Ellington by Scott Zimmerman was well attended. Along with hearing some of his great music, residents learned about the Duke’s early life, and what got him started on the path to being one of the most well respected jazz musicians of his age. Scott shared his insights into how Duke Ellington’s compositions and style changed and grew from the 1920s, through the 1930s at the Cotton Club in Harlem, then into the 1940s and post World War II.

    Being tech-aware

    The Smarter Service is now at The Canterbury. They bring a full Tech Concierge program to residents. In addition to their regular support, they delivered a class on a reality we all face each day: “Scams & Fraud: Navigating Technology Safely”. Attendees learned how to recognize common online scams and become aware of the best strategies to protect personal data.

    Arjun & Friends

    The Valmonte Room was filled with residents for the performance of Arjun & Friends. Arjun and Friends is a community volunteer group started by the piano studio of Dr. Linda Govel. Arjun started off with a solo piano recital on Feb 19, 2019 at The Canterbury. In the conversation that followed the performance, residents asked him to come back again to play piano compositions by a variety of composers. Arjun’s friend and studio mate James Govednik joined Arjun at the next recital. With more recitals being scheduled, Arjun & Friends was formed as a volunteer group.

    Last month we welcomed two talented performers for an an afternoon of classical music. The audience was captivated by the breadth of pieces. We look forward to welcoming Arjun & Friends in the future.

    What’s the scoop?

    On Saturdays, the dining services team hosts a weekly Ice Cream Social, dishing out different flavors of ice cream with fun and interesting toppings. Residents enjoy their favorite ice cream while mingling with neighbors.

    Outings

    A trip to the Palos Verdes Art Center

    Docent Gail Phinney led us through “The Summer Show”. She shared her insight into the pieces and their history.

    This juried all-media exhibition incorporates work from members of the Palos Verdes Art Center’s seven active artists groups: Artists Open Group, Pacific Arts Group, Paletteers, Peninsula Artists, Photographic and Digital Artists, The Artists Studio, and The Third Dimension. The visit was a great way to spend the afternoon enjoying all of this artistry in the gallery.

    Following time exploring the art, residents enjoyed lunch at a nearby gem, The Little Olivia, a Mediterranean-themed restaurant offering a blend of Greek and Italian cuisines with fresh, flavorful dishes. It was a day that fed people’s spirits and appetites.

    Outings

    A visit to the Bowers Museum

    Residents visited the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. The museum is renowned for its permanent collection that includes works from pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, Native American art, the art of Asia, Africa, and Oceania, and California plein-air painting.

    Bowers Museum welcomed the US premiere of China’s Terracotta Warriors exhibition back in 2008. It now proudly presents new discoveries with their current exhibit, “World of the Terracotta Warriors: New Archaeological Discoveries in Shaanxi in the 21st Century!” Residents were captivated by this special exhibition.

    After taking in these stunning, preserved works from 210 BCE, residents relaxed with a great lunch al fresco at the museum’s Tangata Restaurant.

    Outings

    Boat Ride in Long Beach Harbor

    A group took to the water to explore Los Alamitos Bay & Naples Canal aboard Duffy Boats. The boats are quiet, eco-friendly electric boats that offer comfortable, gentle trips. From the water, the group took in iconic harbor sights, passed luxury yachts and viewed waterfront estates, all while enjoying a boxed lunch.
