    “A Remarkable Story” with Zoot Velasco and Altadena Heritage

    Zoot was severely burned as an infant, losing the muscles in his right foot, yet went on to a 12-year career as a professional dancer, actor, and international touring artist working with Prince, Michael Jackson, Arsenio Hall, and James Cameron among others. In addition to raising more than $32 million for various organizations, he built four art centers for the City of LA, a Boys & Girls Club, and a Theatre for the City of Long Beach. Join us to hear his remarkable story.

    Happy Birthday, America!

    Join the talented musicians, Paul & Stephanie for our final performance in the Auditorium before construction begins. They will perform beautiful works of the “Dean of American Music”, Aaron Copland, along with one of the most celebrated composers of the mid-20th century, Samuel Barber.

    South Sister Volcano

    Oregon is home to a wealth of spectacular areas, but one of the most remarkable is a string of volcanoes that extends from Northern California, through the middle of Oregon into Washington. This fantastic range is known as the Cascade Mountains. Guest Doug McKenzie will take us into the heart of the Three Sisters Wilderness. Join us for a slideshow filled with breathtaking scenery.

    For Those Who Wander

    Jean-Max Lattemann (countertenor) and Eva Schaumkell (piano) join forces in a program that reflects on the many faces of the wanderer in song. Performed by two Wiesbaden natives now based on opposite sides of the world, their program For Those Who Wander celebrates music’s enduring fascination with journeying, connecting performer and listener across landscapes both real and imagined.

    Summer Nights Series — Fonteyn: Music of the 70’s

    Bewitched by the sound of the 70’s, Fonteyn draws from her musical idols, Carole King, Todd Rundgren, and Paul McCartney, to name a few. Her debut album “Trip the Light Fantastic” offered music centered around rainbow chords and melody. Her songs are playful, sentimental, and offer a sense of the theatrical.

    The Birds and Their Habitats in the Greater Pasadena Area

    Join Jodhan Fine from the Pasadena Audubon Society for a presentation on Pasadena’s birds and the habitats they occupy. From chaparral specialties to urban adapted birds, riparian reliers to high elevation denizens, learn about the different species present in our area and how they rely on different habitat types.

    Summer Nights with Grace Faye

    Vintage jazz singer Grace Faye brings her iconic style and voice back to MonteCedro. Specializing in swing tunes, Rat Pack classics, and traditional jazz standards from the 1920s to the 1940s, she delights audiences with an evening of song.

    How Did They Do It? F1: The Movie

    Join Bryce Stevens from Sector 5 Media, a premier motorsports and karting media company known for capturing professional race photos and video packages for competitors across the country. Bryce will discuss the special effects and movie magic used to bring “F1: The Movie” to life. Using clips from the movie, commentary and visual explanations, he will take us through how the production team created the iconic race/crash scenes and merged real and fictional F1 action to create a blockbuster.

    America’s 250!

    Renowned pianist, Dr. Kelly Anderson joins us this month to perform and discuss music that celebrates our nation’s Semiquincentennial. An instructor at Pasadena City College, Dr. Anderson records for various media including documentaries, and brings his storytelling to every performance.

    June Events

    Just like the weather, things are heating up here at MonteCedro. Half way through the year, it is a time both to reflect and look forward. From honoring our veterans to peering into the night-sky mysteries of the universe, we had a full range of moments, memories, and experiences this month.

    You’ve Got to Move It!

    This month we marked National Seniors Health and Fitness Day, and what a day it was. We celebrated the joys and benefits of movement and the power of staying active at any age. The day included a walk-a-thon, and we set up a walking loop around the community. Whether a person completed one lap or many, each participant showed what it means to keep moving forward. From gentle strolls to serious power walkers, it was a wonderful day of camaraderie.

    Memorial Day

    This Memorial Day, we gathered to honor the lives and legacies of those lost in recent wars through “Ways to Honor and Remember.” This program featured powerful portrait tributes to fallen soldiers, painted by MonteCedro residents and team members. This event invited us to reflect, remember and ensure their stories, and the stories of all fallen soldiers are never forgotten.

    Star Light, Star Bright

    Recently, we visited Mount Wilson with our Creative Living partners from the Carnegie Observatories. This amazing facility allows a glimpse into wonders of the universe. After learning about the history of Mount Wilson, we entered the main observatory that houses the gigantic 60-inch telescope. Peering into the night sky, we were able to view up close both a double star and a globular cluster of stars. It was a rare and wondrous experience.

    Creative Baking

    Baking is a favorite activity for The Courtyards. As part of our Creative Cooking program, we assisted MonteCedro’s talented Culinary Team in the measuring, mixing, and baking of some of our favorite treats. Afterwards, we enjoyed the delicious results of our collective efforts.

    Jazz Masters

    This month we welcomed The Chad Edward Band, a spectacular jazz quartet that includes piano, standup bass, drums, and saxophone. The soulful tunes, toe-tapping favorites and smooth vibes made for a fantastic show.

    Geffen Galleries at the LA County Museum of Art

    We recently had the opportunity to explore the new David Geffen Galleries at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Two decades in the making, the 110,000 square feet of galleries are housed in an elevated gray building, ringed with enormous windows. The museum’s director, Michael Govan, described the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor’s work as “of the future and past at the same time”. We were able to get an early entry into this remarkable cultural destination. There is so much to see, we know this was just the first of many visits.
