    Macular Degeneration — Doc Talk

    Join us for a discussion with Dr. Audrey Tai, a board-certified ophthalmologist based in Orange County with expertise in macular degeneration. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that damages the macula—the central part of the retina. This damage blurs or distorts sharp, detailed central vision needed for activities like reading and driving. Learn about AMD, and the latest updates on this disease.

    Teddy Roosevelt with Chris Epting

    Join author Chris Epting for an insightful and story-filled look back at our 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt. From protecting roughly 230 million acres of public land, establishing the U.S. Forest Service to initiating the Panama Canal, his legacy continues today. This is sure to be an informative and entertaining presentation.

    Traveling Gardener with Kris

    Join Kris Bonner, a UC Master Gardener and Huntington Botanical Gardens docent. Kris began his Traveling Gardener talks in 2022. He takes audiences on fun and inspirational virtual visits to some of the great gardens in the world, sharing the transformative power of travel and nature.

    Armchair Astronomer — Jupiter: Big Bully in the Hood

    Ken Vanlew, retired astronomy and physics teacher, joins us via Zoom to discuss Jupiter. This massive planet could contain more than 1,300 Earths, has a stormy atmosphere, and a vast collection of moons. Sure to be a fascinating discussion.

    Timeless Melodies — Bob Hope

    Join Timeless Melodies for a presentation of songs from this American icon, Bob Hope. In a career that spanned almost 80 years, he starred in seven highly successful “Road to…” musical comedies with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. Bob Hope was also a massive supporter of the military, going on 57 USO tours to entertain active-duty service members. Larry will bring to life Bob Hope’s remarkable career through video clips and his vast knowledge of music and the Great American Songbook.

    June Events

    Summer is a time for the great outdoors. Be it hiking, a community BBQ, or relaxing in the shade of our quiet gardens, there is a place for everyone here. As an active senior community, we pride ourselves on being adventurous, staying curious, and meeting new people.

    A Time to Remember

    Over Memorial Day weekend, we took time to remember our veterans and the fallen who sacrificed for our freedom. We celebrated that freedom by coming together. The day included a barbecue, with burgers, hot dogs and sides galore were on the menu. We played cornhole and ended the day with music and dancing.

    A thick, seared steak is cooking in a pan with bubbling butter, whole garlic cloves, and sprigs of fresh herbs, giving it a rich and juicy appearance.

    Master Chef

    The first Thursday of every month, the amazing Chef Chad demonstrates how to make his favorite recipes. This time it was garlic and butter basted Filet Mignon and yes, it was absolutely amazing. Fortunately, Chef Chad made enough to go around or we might have had a situation. Kidding aside, we are so fortunate for talented chefs like Chad at The Covington and the incredible meals we get to enjoy every day.

    Life in Motion

    One thing you will notice when you visit our community is that we are constantly on the go, pursuing interests and living life to its fullest. Part of the secret to staying active is being active. At The Covington, that includes special classes twice a week to keep our joints healthy and limber. It is an hour of fun-filled camaraderie and smiles.

    The Art of Residents

    One of our most anticipated events is celebrating artists in our midst. This month we celebrated a resident, Joanne who only joined the art classes upon moving here, having never painted before. Under the guidance of a talented and supportive instructor, she has developed her skills and confidence as an artist. Her work is now featured in the Resident Art Gallery.

    The Sound of Music

    We recently attended the stunning Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa for a beautiful performance of the beloved musical The Sound of Music. A critically acclaimed North American tour of this Rogers & Hammerstein classic relived some of our favorite moments and melodies, including “Do-Re-Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and “Edelweiss”. We left feeling that the hills were indeed alive with the Sound of Music.

    Laguna Canyon

    The Covington has several Creative Living Partners, including Laguna Canyon Foundation. This special relationship allows us to enjoy guided hikes though Laguna Canyon to immerse ourselves in the area’s flora and fauna. While on the hike, we learned about the environmental changes and challenges of Laguna Canyon and the importance of the canyons to the ecosystem of the surrounding regions.
