    Recent Events

It is that time of year when seasonal celebrations start to define our gatherings. Yes, we carved some pumpkins, but we also visited museums, attended a very local art show, and found plenty of time to connect with friends both old and new.

    Story Time

One of the most popular programs at The Canterbury is Everyone Has a Story. This monthly event provides an opportunity for residents to share their life story and experiences. This month, Tommy B. talked about his successful 30-year career as an Assistant Director in the film and television industry. Tommy worked on films and long-running TV shows such as Mermaids, The Addams Family, Crash, and CSI Miami. He also wrote a great book entitled “Not Just Sunglasses and Autographs”, which two lucky residents got to take home.

    A Very Local Art Walk

We are lucky to have so many artists in our community, even more so because they are so prolific. Jackie S. recently hosted an Artist’s Gallery of work created by those who call The Canterbury home. The artists were on hand to talk about their creations, their inspirations, their process and their tools. The wide variety of mediums provided a wonderful perspective on the depth and breadth of opportunity for artistic expression.

    The Benefits of Community

Living at The Canterbury offers us many advantages including a vibrant social life, delicious food, continuity and safety, and a wealth of programs and outings. As residents, we get to enjoy these benefits every day and no one personifies this enjoyment more than Betty who just celebrated her 102nd birthday! It was a day of happiness as she celebrated with family and friends over a wonderful dinner. Happy Birthday, Betty!

    The Art of the Story

We recently spent an afternoon at the impressive and fascinating Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The recently opened museum founded by filmmaker George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson showcases visual storytelling, including painting, photography, sculpture, illustration, comic art, performance, and video.Every corner is filled with imagination and design. From the beautiful artwork to the unique details and artistic perspectives, it was a reminder of how powerful art can be in bringing stories to life. We left with hearts full of inspiration and a renewed appreciation for all forms of creativity.

    Pumpkin Kisses and Harvest Wishes

The fall feelings are in full swing at The Canterbury and a group of us took advantage of the wonderful weather to visit Mr. Jones’ Farm. Our mission was to pick out a variety of pumpkins in all colors, shapes and sizes to decorate the community through the Halloween season. The pumpkins are now on full display, so drop by for a visit. There may even be a piece of candy for you (if we haven’t already eaten it all ourselves.)

    Art Around Us

Recently we spent time at the Palos Verdes Art Center and took in a few exhibitions. The Studio School Faculty Show opened in mid-September and runs through mid-November. The exhibit displays current works by PVAC art instructors, including Jenna Michele, Paul Brayton, Jo Cladinos, and Bernard Fallon. Seeing the breadth of their work was a reminder of the creative inspiration drawn from our surroundings. Another exhibition we were able to view is Stand by Me, a retrospective celebrating noted plein air painter, Stephen Mirich. He was born in San Pedro and continues to live and paint near the California coast. His works capture the stunning beauty of our home. It was an inspiring and memorable day for us all.
