Armchair Astronomer — Cosmic Verses: Pyramids to Stonehenge

Ken Vanlew joins us via Zoom to share his insights into The Cosmic Verses: A Rhyming History of the Universe (2006). British astronomer and author James Muirden uses witty, rhythmic poetry to detail human developments in understanding astronomy. Beginning with the pyramids and continuing to Stonehenge, he describes how Hipparchus discovered precession, and Eratosthenes measured the Earth, but Aristotle set science back 2,000 years. Copernicus saw the Sun, not Earth, as the center, but Galileo was sentenced to house arrest because he dared to say that the Earth moved. A lot to discuss about our planet and our universe.

Join Larry Maurer and Timeless Melodies to explore Irving Berlin’s extraordinary musical legacy.

    November 24 2:00PM – 3:00PM Schumacher Hall – Via Zoom

Titanic: A Story of Courage and Survival

One hundred and fourteen years after its sinking, the Titanic remains a source of fascination and one of history’s major cautionary tales. Via Zoom, Elizabeth Kaye tells the riveting story of what happened to passengers after the “unsinkable” ship was fatally wounded by an iceberg. We’ll focus on women who boarded Lifeboat No. 8 and found themselves adrift in the icy, open sea, in the dead of night. These women were led by the Countess of Rothes, who calmed other passengers and manned the lifeboat’s tiler, a determined, valiant figure in her ermine coat and heirloom pearls. Her story, and those of other passengers, makes this timeless saga totally new, and compelling.

    July Events

Gratitude has been the theme over the last month at The Covington. From celebrating our great country, appreciating returning virtuosos, or thanking the incredible team members who make life in our community so wonderful, we have so much to be thankful for.

    A Special Group of People

The team members at The Covington are superb. Incredible professionals and equally wonderful as people, they are family, and we let them know as often as we can. Recently we provided a coffee truck for all staff to enjoy as they arrived for work. It’s a small way to show our appreciation.

    A Prodigy Returns

Our latest Schumacher Concert Series performance was another resounding success as the delightful music of the Vieness Piano Duo took center stage. Performed by the incredible husband and wife duo of Vijay Venkatesh and Eva Schaumkell, they had the audience captivated from the first few bars. Vijay’s initial performance at The Covington was many years ago when he was only 14 years old. We have enjoyed watching his star rise in the music industry and are grateful that he returns to delight us time and again.

    Happy Birthday, America!

We celebrated America’s 250th birthday with some very special events. First, Peter M. Small presented a monologue dressed as George Washington. His presentation was so authentic, you had to blink to remind yourself that it wasn’t the actual First President of the United States. The following day, on the Fourth of July, we broke out the BBQs and enjoyed traditional holiday fare, played ping pong and cornhole, all while being entertained by a roaming Barbershop Quartet.

    Outings

    Big Bear Lake

We enjoyed a spectacularly beautiful day on our recent visit to Big Bear Lake. Our first stop was Big Bear Lake Village where we poked around and took in some refreshments. Then, we boarded the Miss Liberty paddle wheeler for a tour of the lake. It was hot and sunny but there was plenty of shade on the boat and once under way, the gentle breeze was refreshing. It was a calm day too so no one needed their sea legs. From the middle of the lake, the views of the surrounding terrain were absolutely spectacular.
