Join us for a screening of one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most shocking films of all time. The 1960 film Psycho redefined horror movies. The film score, written by Bernard Herrmann, was so iconic that Hitchcock said, “Thirty-three percent of the effect of Psycho was due to the music.” Marion Crane, played by Janet Leigh visits the Bates Motel and falls prey to one of cinema’s most notorious psychopaths Norman Bates, played by Anthony Perkins. A must-see for movie lovers. Theater snacks will be served.

May was a month full of celebrations, including Cinco de Mayo and Mother’s Day to name but two. With the warmer weather and Mother Nature bursting into bloom, there is an energy and vitality in the air, something residents have at any time of year. In fact, this month we even had a Centurion Celebration for residents who are at least 100 years old!

Our community is always ready to throw a party and Cinco de Mayo offers the perfect opportunity. This year, things began with a lively music and dance performance by Raises y Cultura to get everyone in the spirit. After, residents gathered around a large communal table to enjoy festive appetizers and margaritas.

We celebrated Mother’s Day this year with a wonderful and fun dinner. The special meal included a choice of lobster tail, filet mignon or chicken cordon bleu. It was our way of saying thank you to all of the mothers at The Canterbury.

Several residents at The Canterbury are 100 years old or more! They are an incredible example of successful longevity and a testament, we believe, to the lifestyle, camaraderie, and wellbeing that The Canterbury offers. To celebrate these wonderful people, singer Grace Fae and her pianist Wayne performed a beautiful selection of musical standards and light jazz. Following the performances, everyone enjoyed a delicious meal prepared especially for the occasion by the culinary team.

Wendy Morgan, a longtime member of Omnilore Lectures, joined us to present her insight on sunflowers. These beloved plants provide oil, seeds, and beauty. She shared the history of the flowers, as well as little-known facts. It was a fascinating lecture.

Karen, a daughter of one of the residents, shared her stories and photography from the exotic continent of Africa. She shared travel tips, how to get the most from exploring other cultures and the joy of seeing other parts of our beautiful world.
Outings
Recently, residents took a trip to the Point Vicente Interpretive Center. Opened in 1984, the center’s mission is to showcase the unique features and history of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The docents gave a special tour, helping us to step into a quieter, more expansive version of the Southern California Coast. It is also a great location to spot whales.

Recently, residents visited the Chen Art Gallery in Torrance. This nonprofit museum houses one of the most important collections of Chinese art in the United States. Operated by the T.F. Chen Family Foundation, the gallery showcases the collection of art by world-renowned herbalist and pharmacist Dr. Tei Fu Chen and his family. Open to the public since 2001, the Chen Art Gallery displays an impressive array of more than 1,000 artifacts spanning 5000 years of Chinese history. After the tour, residents enjoyed a delicious lunch at Matsui.
