    Join Theo Siegel, Film Historian as he talks about the history and making of “Tootsie”. This 1982 romantic comedy, directed by Sydney Pollack, starred Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards. Following the discussion, we will screen the film.

    Omnilore Lecture: Sunflowers

    Join Wendy Morgan, longtime member of Omnilore for a fun discussion on sunflowers. She’ll share her insights on where sunflowers come from, the difference between sunflower oil and olive oil and more fun facts.

    A Day at The Movies with Theo Siegel

    Join Theo Siegel, Film Historian as he talks about the history and making of “The Quiet Man”. This 1952 romantic comedy stars John Wayne as an Irish-born boxer who returns from the U.S. to his homeland, and Maureen O’Hara, who captures his heart. John Ford received the Academy Award for best director.

    The Holiday Season is always special at The Canterbury, a time for friends and family, giving and receiving, and joy and gratitude. As always, residents embrace the festivities with both warmth and glee, filling our community with love and cheer.

    Christmas Time is Here

    It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at The Canterbury. Decorating the Christmas tree is the official start of the holiday season and what a gorgeous tree it is. The beginning of December also marks the beginning of Holiday Spirit Week, during which time everyone is encouraged to wear their love of the holidays in style. From holiday headwear and festive socks to being adorned in red and white, residents and team members joined in the fun.

    In the Assisted Living community, residents decorated their own tabletop Christmas trees to bring the spirit of the season into their homes.

    History Alive with Peter Small

    Peter Small, Historical Impressionist, portrayed Thomas Jefferson, our country’s third president. This remarkable historical figure was brought to life in a captivating performance. Peter Small presented Thomas Jefferson as a scientist, farmer, inventor, architect, and author of the Declaration of Independence.

    Artists in Residence

    You may not realize it, but The Canterbury is full of budding artists. While some have been professional or hobby artists before they joined our community, many have discovered an artistic talent since calling The Canterbury home.

    Art is an important part of daily life in the community and every other month residents host an Artists’ Gallery. This month was an “Anything Goes” theme. The artwork could be something personally made, bought or gifted. We welcomed all residents to participate and share their special or favorite piece.

    One favorite art class is “Rubber Block Printmaking” with Loren Kantor. Residents have the opportunity to carve their own print block to create greeting cards. In anticipation of the season, residents created Holiday cards to share with friends and family.

    Veterans’ Day

    Honoring veterans is a tradition at The Canterbury. This year we organized a “Tribute to Veterans” afternoon concert by the PV Symphonic Band, one of our Creative Living Partners. They performed to a packed house with our Veterans sitting in the front row. Thank you to all who are serving or have served.

    Bright, Bold, and Beautiful

    This month in Fun to Create with Susan, residents learned how to design their own bright, fresh flower arrangements. They were able to take home their beautiful works to enjoy.

    Norton Simon Museum

    A group of residents recently visited the stunning Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena. They were treated to a private tour of the art and grounds, and learned about the history and stories behind the beautiful artwork. After the tour, they enjoyed lunch at the Garden Cafe.

    Foodie Adventures

    Our foodie adventures took us to Din Tai Fung in Torrance, celebrated for their world-renowned soup dumplings. Residents were given a front row seat to see how the dumplings are made and prepared. It helped make the meal extra delicious.
