    Timeless Melodies — Bob Hope

    Join Timeless Melodies for a presentation of songs from this American icon, Bob Hope. In a career that spanned almost 80 years, he starred in seven highly successful “Road to…” musical comedies with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. Bob Hope was also a massive supporter of the military, going on 57 USO tours to entertain active-duty service members. Larry will bring to life Bob Hope’s remarkable career through video clips and his vast knowledge of music and the Great American Songbook.

    Happy 250th! What is The United States? 


    Professor Anthony Szczurek from Saddleback College joins us to lead a discussion about our country. This year’s semi-quincentennial marks the world’s longest experiment in large-scale democratic government, as well as a lot of political tension and disagreement about what the United States of America represents today. How similar and different are we to the U.S. of 1776? How might Americans, and the rest of the world, imagine the U.S. in the remainder of the 21st century? Sure to be a thought-provoking afternoon.

    Jethro BoDidley is an International Pop Star who has taken time off from his busy schedule to perform at 55 + communities, assisted living facilities and special events in and around the Southland. You will be thoroughly entertained by his playful demeanor and joyful music. What does Jethro sound like? Imagine Rod Stewart sings the hits of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s! A guaranteed good time for all!

    Rise and Hike: Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail

    Have you ever imagined hiking one of the nation’s most iconic trails, from Mexico to Canada, 2,653 miles over 175 days? Want the dirt? Join us for a presentation by Scott Thomas, Executive Director of Laguna Canyon Foundation. Scott will share lessons learned from his through-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail, including his training on our local wilderness trails and highlights of the journey. This is the what, why, and how of hiking a long-distance trail.

    This past month was filled with activities at The Covington.

    A virtual trip to the Islands

    Each year we visit the Hawaiian Islands in spirit. The celebration starts with the ever-popular Luau. Along with a delectable assortment of foods, residents were entertained with music and dance. The award-winning cast of TUPUA takes great pride in providing the finest Polynesian culture and entertainment. They presented rhythmic Tahitian drums and beautiful Hula. There was a true spirit of Aloha in the community.

    Performances

    Music from the ’50s and ’60s

    A new entertainer joined us in August. Jennifer Kersey, founder of the Storybook Family Playhouse brought us music from decades long past. Jennifer has performed across the country and in Asia. She has entertained on cruise ships and at theme parks. Her beautiful voice captivated our audience.

    Ukulele Club

    During Happy Hour, our resident group of talented individuals entertained those at our Canyon House. These musicians come together to perform their favorite songs, bringing a smile to everyone’s face.

    Outings

    Laguna Beach

    Our annual trip to the Laguna Beach Pageant of the Masters and Festival of the Arts was a resident favorite.

    Pageant of the Masters re-creates famous works of art. This year, the theme was “Gold Coast: Treasures of California.” This 90-minute performance brings famous works of art to life on the stage. These tableaux vivants (“living pictures”) are incredibly faithful re-creations of classical and contemporary works of art, with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. It’s a memorable experience.

    The Festival Art Show is named one of the top art festivals in the nation, and features the work of more than 100 Orange County artists. With so much to see and experience, it was a favorite day for all.

    Outings

    San Juan Capistrano

    A popular day trip was to San Juan Capistrano. Residents enjoyed a historic walking tour. This charming community was founded in 1776, when Father Junípero Serra established the mission. The restoration of the mission in the 1910s and 1920s transformed the town into a beloved destination for visitors. Residents spent the day exploring the beautifully preserved buildings, visiting the shops and enjoying a meal.
