It’s the season for sharpening pencils and readying backpacks, but students aren’t the only ones getting down to the business of learning. “ECS likes to think fall is back-to-school season for residents, too,” says Jackie Stevens, Sr. Director of Creative Living & Communications. It’s a reminder that learning never stops. For our Life Plan Community residents at MonteCedro, The Canterbury, and The Covington, pumpkin season is the perfect time to embrace new challenges, revisit timeless ideas, and dive into experiences both typical and extraordinary. Creative Living doesn’t just involve splashing paint, molding clay, or analyzing the written word. It’s about seizing all life has to offer.
And yes, that includes having fun. From goats that double as dance partners to apple pie in a historic mountain town, our communities are ready to explore, engage, and celebrate the season together.
MonteCedro
MonteCedro is kicking off fall with plenty of opportunities to learn and laugh. Residents will open their books (and hearts) with Life Worth Living, a multi-week book study. “It’s a chance for residents to dive into the great works of philosophers and modern thinkers; really, the emotions of what makes life meaningful,” Stevens says.
Music takes the spotlight with Music of the War Years, led by Oliver Greene of the Pasadena Conservatory of Music. The course, Stevens notes, looks at what made music special during the period from World War I to Vietnam.
Toby Hooper adds another layer of storytelling with a four-part study of mythology and how ancient tales still shape our lives today. And for those who prefer a little glamour, the annual Phantom’s Lair Casino Night transforms the campus into a Phantom of the Opera–themed casino, complete with costumes, cocktails, and plenty of laughter.
Entertainment continues with performances from comedian Fritz Coleman, music by Melodia Mariposa, and a concert by international singer John Fluker. And the ever-popular goat yoga returns. As Stevens puts it with a smile, “It’s like a goat dance party happening in tandem with the yoga instructor. Residents even lead dances with the goats.”
The Covington
At The Covington, fall is about community, culture, and a touch of festivity. The season kicks off with Oktoberfest, a lively afternoon of polka, food, and fun. As for what residents enjoy most about the event, what else could it be? “Usually the beer and the band,” says Tracy Beam, Director of Creative Living.
Another highlight is the annual Julian Apple Trip. The charming mountain town is best known for its fresh-baked apple pie, with shops that seem to compete for who can serve up the flakiest crust. “Our residents love these types of trips,” Beam shares. “For many, this is new. The pies are fantastic, and the town’s historic charm makes it a perfect outing.”
The Canterbury
The Canterbury is leaning into creativity and wellness this fall. First up is Sip and Paint with Gabriella Anderson, where residents enjoy watercolor painting, specialty drinks, and light appetizers. “It’s a relaxed, communal atmosphere,” says Diana Ernandes, Director of Creative Living.
Residents can also join Spanish classes taught by Gina Diaz, The Canterbury’s new instructor, who starts this September. They can take part in the Fall Prevention and Health Fair, which Ernandes describes as including everything from giveaways and raffle prizes to chair yoga and music therapy. Equal parts practical and fun, it’s a highlight of the season.
Fall wraps up with Sondheim Sings with Seth Becker. Part of Becker’s American Songbook Series, the program includes stories, recordings, and even items from Sondheim’s estate. Residents can enjoy film performances of classics like “Send in the Clowns,” “Being Alive,” and “Sunday.”
Whether it’s diving into philosophy, dancing with goats, raising a stein at Oktoberfest, or painting with a brush in one hand and a glass of wine in the other, this year’s fall programs put the focus on community, connection, and the joy of lifelong learning together.
