It’s August, a month when our social calendar is filled with a wealth of fun events, activities, performances and get-togethers. Join us to take in a film, learn more about music, watch Hawaiian dancers or simply meet some of those who call The Canterbury home.

    Forgotten Hollywood with Manny Pacheco

    Author Manny Pacheco is a Southern California television and radio personality whose career has spanned more than three decades. He is a 34-year member of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, Screen Actors Guild, and the youngest member of Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters. Join us to hear his insights into the forgotten history of the silver screen.

    A Day at The Movies with Theo Siegel

    Join Theo Siegel, Film Historian as he discusses the background and making of “A League of Their Own”. This beloved 1992 film, directed by Penny Marshall, stars Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Rosie O’Donnell and Madonna. Take a journey back to World War II when the first female professional baseball league was starting up. Not to be missed, because “There’s no crying in baseball!”

    Luau Happy Hour

    The Ku’uipo ‘O Hula Polynesian Dancers join us for our annual Luau Happy Hour. Enjoy themed appetizers, drinks and a wonderful performance that will transport us to the Hawaiian Islands.

    Song Book Series with Seth Becker

    The American Songbook is a monthly program specializing in the Golden Era of stage and screen. This month, Seth Becker will be discussing Ferrante and Teicher, a duo of American pianists known for their clever arrangements of familiar classical pieces, movie soundtracks, and show tunes. Please join us.

    Curiosity and fun are at the heart of our events. From game show competition to music and hikes, residents filled their calendars with vibrant activities. Below is some of what we got up to last month.

    July 4th celebrations

    On our nation’s birthday, we moved our Happy Hour outside to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with music. Performers John and Justin entertained us on the main dining room patio with memorable songs, while special drinks kept everyone in the spirit of the afternoon. It was a fun, festive celebration.

    Learning is For Life

    Recently, Omnilore, one of our fantastic Creative Living Partners stopped by to speak about all of the programs available to residents of our community. An array of presentations and lectures on a plethora of subjects means that learning never stops at The Canterbury.

    After Hours

    We may not stay up as late as we used to but we are always happy to burn the (not quite) ‘midnight oil’ if we have a good reason. After Hours with Arjun and Friends is one of them. This very popular and well attended summer musical series is a resident favorite. Making it extra special is that all the musicians are students.

    Competition?

    When you’ve had as many amazing experiences as we have, you get to know a few things. And if you don’t believe it, just ask us. Proof of our knowledge and memory was on display again at a community game of JEOPARDY. Hosted by Patty and Jennifer from Game Day Fun, the competition was fierce, but jovial. The top three residents with the most points won a prize, and bragging rights.

    Happy Father’s Day

    Fathers play an important role in every stage of our lives. This year, we had a special dinner where many of our gentlemen residents were joined by their children, families, and friends. We even had an Instagram worthy display where fathers could gather with their families for photos. Dinner was delicious as was the special cocktail Low Tide mixed just for the occasion.

    We visited Frida Mexican Cuisine in Torrance. The renowned restaurant offers the perfect combination of textures, rich flavors, colorful ingredients and traditional culinary methods. The delicious afternoon allowed everyone to share stories and enjoy impeccably crafted dishes.

    Scenic walk and lunch

    We explored the Pointe Vincente Interpretive Center. This beautiful park, located adjacent to the Point Vicente Lighthouse in Rancho Palos Verdes, is stunning and inspiring. The Interpretive Center opened in 1984 with a mission to present and interpret the unique features and history of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The almost 10,000 square foot Interpretive Center features exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the Peninsula. After learning about our stunning surroundings, we shared stories over a delectable lunch. Because, why not?

    Horsing around

    Lisa, a resident, invited us to visit her beautiful horse Spartan. She rides regularly and loves her connection to her horse and her surroundings. Spartan is stabled at the Rolling Hills Estates, which has access to more than 25 miles of picturesque bridle trails. After meeting Spartan and seeing the stables, everyone enjoyed lunch at Good Stuff, a South Bay favorite.

    Petersen Automotive Museum

    We recently visited the Petersen Automotive Museum located on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. It’s home to 17 exhibitions that capture 100 years of automotive history featuring the world’s greatest vehicles. A resident, Bill, created a series of wood-carved vehicles that until recently were part of the venerated museum. Their curator was able to share her perspective on the depth of talent and commitment reflected in Bill’s work. Following the visit to the museum, everyone enjoyed lunch at the Meyer’s Manx Cafe.
