This month, Cesar Barragan, Regional Director of Fitness from our sister community, MonteCedro, presented a talk and fitness class for the residents at The Canterbury. Cesar holds a degree in kinesiology and is certified in several areas of fitness, including as a Longevity Coach. The event was tremendously popular, and every seat was taken. It inspired and encouraged residents to keep moving and to activate their brain via physical activity every day.

One of our most popular events is “Everyone Has a Story”, where residents share their personal and family history with the community. This month, residents Bill and Gary shared with us some of their family history in the Civil War. They each brought special family heirlooms. Bill showcased original letters and affidavits from E.P. Sanders, his Great Grandfather. Gary brought an antique musket that belonged to his great grandfather, William Saxton who used it during the Civil War. Presentations like this are priceless! A big “Thank you” to Bill and Gary for sharing their stories and bringing our community closer together.

We recently welcomed spring with a New Neighbor Club event, for those considering joining our community. It was a beautiful afternoon for the gathering, filled with great food and even better conversation. Chef Aaron truly spoiled us with refreshing strawberry lemonade, followed by a delicious Asian-inspired salad topped with salmon or chicken. There are so many common ties in Palos Verdes and it was wonderful to rekindle connections, find common interests, and nurture cherished friendships.

Thank you to the amazing culinary team for a wonderful meal.

Resident, Lynn K. led a special class that captured the interest and enthusiasm of residents. The class focused on the connection between movement and cognitive health. Until relatively recently, scientists gave little thought to the neurological effects of dance. Now, researchers are starting to understand its positive impact. Combining music with the mental and physical coordination of dance results in better overall health. This class was a celebration of the power of dance to enhance how we live.

Outings
If there is one thing for certain, The Canterbury is a community of bon vivants and gourmands. That’s why there were so many around the table recently at Avenue Italy restaurant. It was the kind of lunch where time seemed to slow, allowing everyone to sit back and enjoy a truly delicious meal. The great conversations and the wonderful coastal weather of Rancho Palos Verdes made the outing perfetto!

Residents enjoyed a day at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum. The museum is located on the Main Channel of Los Angeles Harbor and its collection and exhibits focus on the history of the Port of Los Angeles.
The historic museum building houses fascinating exhibits, a research library, a ham radio station, and a gift shop. The exhibits include a history of commercial diving in Los Angeles Harbor and a Navy Hall that features large ship models such as the U.S. Navy cruiser Los Angeles and the SS Poseidon model from the 1972 disaster film The Poseidon Adventure. The museum also has an exhibit that chronicles the once thriving San Pedro fishing industry. Their guided tour gave everyone greater insight into the depth and importance of our maritime history.

Outings
Residents were given a tour of the Long Beach Museum of Art.
