    May Events

“May has such a winsome way. Loves to love and laugh and play.”
These are the first two lines of a poem by Annette Wynne and it pretty much describes life at The Covington at this or any time of year. Love, laughter, and play were abundant in May, with celebrations and adventure in the company of good friends.

A group of six harpists perform on stage under blue lighting, each seated behind a harp. Bare white tree branches decorate the background, and audience members watch from the foreground.

    Harp-ers Bazaar

Harps are one of the most beautiful instruments in the world. They look exquisite and they sound divine. When you put six harps together on stage, well it is almost angelic. One resident is a member of the Orange County Harp Group and they invited the ensemble to The Covington for a very special performance. Thank you again to all the talented musicians for bringing this wonderful music to the community.

Five mariachi musicians perform on stage in traditional black outfits with red ties, playing violin, trumpet, guitarrón, and guitar, with blue curtains and gold trim in the background.

    Cinco de Mayo

We don’t really need an excuse to throw a party so when Cinco de Mayo comes around once a year, we’re ready. This year, it started with an outdoor fitness session – uno, dos, tres, cuatro – led by fitness instructor Fredrico Barone. Later, everyone gathered inside to sip margaritas, nosh on delicious Mexican snacks, and enjoy live music by a Mariachi Band. ¡Olé!

Two elderly women, each smiling and holding a decorated plate with a small cake and Happy Mothers Day written on it. One plate says Susan and the other says Carol.

    Mother’s Day

The second Sunday in May is always special at The Covington. Mother’s Day allows us to honor and give thanks for all of their care, nurturing, guidance, and love over the years. It is a day when mothers can have their cake and eat it too. Which they did, thanks to the delicious meal prepared by the culinary team.

Two elderly men wearing glasses and white shirts sit side by side on stage, reading from black music stands, with a dark blue curtain in the background. Both have microphones on their faces.

    Standing Room Only

That’s what happened at a recent show by The Covington’s Readers Theater. This resident-led group combines on-stage reading with dramatic performance. Residents read from scripts, often based on literature, using only their voice to convey the drama. There were no fancy costumes or elaborate sets but the audience still hung on every word, a testament to the talent of the readers. Bravo!

An elderly woman with white hair and glasses stands smiling in front of a display of colorful paintings and her portrait with a biography on the wall. She wears a pastel patterned blouse and a pendant necklace.

    At MonteCedro

    The Art of Residents

Alice C. shared her talent with The Covington. In this past month’s Resident Gallery, she showcased her art, and spoke of her inspiration for her creative expression. Her presentation captivated the audience. The event was part of a social hour that was enjoyed by the whole community.

A group of people stand outdoors behind large, colorful letters spelling SOKA in front of a campus fountain and buildings on a sunny day.

    Outings

    Soka University

Residents had a tour of SOKA University in Aliso Viejo. This private four-year liberal arts college and graduate school was established in 2001, and covers more than 100 acres. In addition to a stunning campus, the University has a Founders Gallery. Residents were able to view the Spring 2026 Art Gallery Exhibitions that include works by Joaquín Palting and Carolyn Monastra. It was a beautiful day to visit a beautiful location.

A group of older adults wearing hats and casual clothes stands on a dirt hiking trail surrounded by green hills and shrubs under a clear blue sky.

    Outings

    Wood Canyon Trail

The hiking club enjoyed a day exploring the Wood Canyons Trail. It’s part of the 4,500 acre Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park. The trail offers an opportunity to walk under shady oak groves and in open grasslands. Many rare and endangered plants and animals call this park home, so it’s a favorite among nature lovers, and provided a stunning day for walkers.
