Committed to a legacy of serving seniors.

Stylish living backed by generations of expertise.

The Canterbury, in Rancho Palos Verdes, opened its doors in 1983. Known for a strong commitment to arts programming and cultural events, our senior living community embodies a dynamic philosophy we call Creative Living.

The Canterbury is one of three nonprofit Life Plan senior living communities developed expressly by our nonprofit owner/operator, Episcopal Communities & Services, Inc. (ECS). In support of their public service mission, ECS has been a premier provider of quality care for seniors for nearly 100 years.

It all began with a determined deaconess and her dime collection.

Deaconess Sophie Miller helped establish the first Episcopal Home in Alhambra, CA, in 1923, for the purpose of caring for widows of Episcopal priests. She did it literally by gathering donations, one dime at a time.

We invite you to learn more about our evolution into the innovative and diverse Episcopal Communities & Services of today, and the many ways we serve and enrich the lives of seniors of all faiths, ages and economic backgrounds on our campuses.

Discover more about the legacy of Sophie Miller—as well as the charitable foundation that lives on in her honor.
