The Power of Story

2023 marks the 100-year anniversary of ECS. A lot has changed for our organization over the last century, but our mission and values have not. To celebrate the milestone, this year our monthly blog will share stories about the uniqueness of the ECS lifestyle, profile our dedicated Team Members, and highlight the incredible people who call our communities home.

Resident Speaker Series at MonteCedro

“Everyone has a story worth hearing.”
~ Dr. Oliver Sacks

We all love a good story. It is a tradition as old as human history. Whether sitting around a campfire, reading a book, or watching a film, a well-told story engages, intrigues, and can even inspire us to a deeper understanding of ourselves and each other. The true power of story is the power of connection.

At ECS communities, connection is one of the foundations of a vibrant lifestyle we call Creative Living. It drives our distinct culture, providing residents with daily educational, cultural, and social opportunities designed to inspire growth, discovery, and lifelong learning.

Recently MonteCedro, recognized as one of the most innovative retirement communities in Pasadena, introduced a new speaker series entitled Everyone Has a Story. It allows residents to connect with each other by sharing their own personal story.

Each month, a new topic is chosen – ‘first jobs’, is a recent example. Residents then take turns in front of the audience, spending five minutes to tell their story. Jackie Stevens, Regional Director of Life Enrichment for ECS, says that hearing about peoples’ experiences in their own words is very meaningful. “It is a wonderful way to get to know each other on a different level,” she says.

For some residents, telling their story in front of an audience is a new experience. “We all have our own internal narrative about ourselves but saying it out loud to others can be challenging,” Jackie says. Residents who have spoken have expressed how the process of preparing to speak has given them a new perspective about themselves. “When we tell our story, we get as much from the experience as our listeners do,” she says.

The Everyone Has a Story resident speaker series is just one example of how enriching life at an ECS continuing care retirement community can be. “Having daily opportunities to continue to learn and grow is just one of many benefits of choosing to call one of our communities home,” Jackie says, “and our residents take full advantage of it.”

The popularity of this and other programs is driven by our resident led, staff supported approach. At each community, resident committees are the driving force of the Creative Living program. “I am constantly inspired by the courage of our residents and the choices they make,” she says. “They also have amazing stories to tell.”
